AI assistant or chatbot: what's the difference and which should your business choose
A chatbot answers customers using buttons and scripts set up in advance. An AI assistant understands a question written in the customer's own words and answers using your data: your price list, terms and frequently asked questions.
In Kazakhstan, the query «ИИ ассистент» ("AI assistant") gets about 210 Google searches a month, «AI ассистент» ("AI assistant") about 50, and «чат бот для бизнеса» ("chatbot for business") about 20 (Google Ads data, October 2026). Let's look at how they differ and which one suits you.
The main difference
| Chatbot | AI assistant | |
|---|---|---|
| How it communicates | buttons and ready-made phrases | in its own words, like a person |
| Understands a question written in the customer's own words | no, it offers a menu | yes |
| Where its answers come from | the script | your price list and terms |
| When it hands over to a manager | when it runs out of buttons | when a question falls outside the rules |
When a chatbot is enough
- There are only a few questions, and they're always the same: address, opening hours, a link to the catalog.
- You just need to collect a request: name, phone number, what the customer is interested in.
- You need to split the flow: "1 — retail, 2 — wholesale".
A chatbot is simpler and cheaper, but customers who write in their own words often get lost in it.
When you need an AI assistant
- Customers ask all kinds of questions about products, sizes, delivery times and availability.
- Lots of requests come in during the evening and at night, when managers aren't working.
- Managers spend time giving the same answers over and over.
The assistant answers right away, at any time, and doesn't send customers into a menu. It hands complex questions over to a manager.
How to make an assistant reliable
- It answers only from your data. Price list, terms, frequently asked questions — the assistant doesn't make things up.
- A program calculates the price. It's more reliable when the cost is calculated by a program based on your price list, and the assistant just puts it into the reply.
- Anything unusual goes to a manager. The assistant passes discounts, complaints and complex orders to a person.
An example from our work
We built our own platform, makeden.app: a business connects the assistant, and it answers customers in WhatsApp and Telegram based on that business's price list and terms. Learn more on the AI assistant in WhatsApp page.
What about a voice bot?
We don't build voice bots that call customers on their own: mass automated calls in Kazakhstan can get a number blocked. For talking with customers, messaging in WhatsApp is more reliable.
Frequently asked questions
To prevent that, it's better to have a program calculate the price from the price list, and the assistant just states it. It hands non-standard orders over to a manager.
The assistant will say it will check, and hand the conversation over to a manager.
Yes. It answers right away at any time, and in the morning the manager sees all the conversations.
Yes. The requests and questions collected by the chatbot will be useful to the assistant as a basis for its answers.
